Located in the centre of Côte d’Ivoire, Yamossoukro is the political and administrative capital of the country. The city was developed from the fusion of several villages and was established as the capital city of Côte d’Ivoire in 1983. In Yamoussoukro you have the possibility to visit several prestigious Ivoirian monuments such as the Basilica Notre Dame de la Paix, the Fondation Felix Houphouet Boigny, the Hotel President, the Presidential palace of the late Ivorian president Felix Houphouet Boigny and the nearby Caymans Lake, the Residence of the MPs, the Big Mosque and many more.
The Basilica Notre Dame de la Paix is an imposing and splendid architectural work with magnificently painted glass windows which give a luminous brightness to the interior. You will also admire there the canopy and some sculptures. The edifice supplants the whole city with beauty and a paticular serenity. Reserve at least 45 minutes of your time for a guided tour. The guides are very friendly, well informed and will give you historical information and details about the monument.
The palace of the former president and the caymans lake are also places to visit. You can attend the caymans feeding at particular days, an impressive and spectacular show. You should bring your camera to capture this memorable moments.
The residence of the MPs and the Hotel Président are another buildings to visit. The Hotel Président is an architectural jewel built in the 1980s which has seen its best days in the 1980s and 1990s. On the 14th floor you have a panoramic restaurant with a perfect view of the city and it surroundings.
